Circular Fisheries Cultivation Implements Algae System to Clean Leftover Feed and Fish Waste

The problem of phosphate and nitrogen waste accumulation from leftover feed and fish waste in the commercial aquaculture sector is now beginning to emerge. The old practice of fish farming, which often discharged ammonia-rich wastewater directly into public waters, has been proven to damage the surrounding ecosystem and trigger mass mortality of aquatic life. As a solution, modern fish farmers have begun implementing circular bioeconomic principles in their ponds.


This system integrates fish and algae cultivation in a single, interconnected water cycle. Pollutants that are typically toxic to fish are instead absorbed by the algae as primary nutrients for their growth. Algae play an active role in stabilizing water quality, maintaining oxygen levels, and suppressing the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the ponds without the use of chemical pesticides. 


This circular model not only successfully stabilizes fish productivity due to maintained water quality but also generates double benefits for fish farmers. The algae biomass that thrives from the waste absorption can be harvested periodically and processed into independent, protein-rich feed ingredients. This circular supply chain demonstrates that the fisheries business can operate with zero waste and be environmentally friendly.
